Downgrading of Belmullet District hospital will increase pressure on Mayo University Hospital

Fianna Fáil T.D. for Mayo Lisa Chambers has described the downgrading of Belmullet District hospital as a retrograde step in the provision of health services in Mayo

Speaking on the matter Deputy Chambers said “it is deeply concerning to learn that no further admissions to Belmullet District Hospital will be permitted, all agency staff will cease employment immediately and all staff on temporary contracts will not have their contracts renewed once expired. These steps will effectively close the hospital in a very short space of time.” says Chambers

“We have a serious problem in this county with bed capacity which is why we consistently get reports of patients on trolleys waiting for admission to Mayo University Hospital (MUH). If we close beds in Belmullet District Hospital, we remove vital capacity in the community and put more pressure on MUH and other services. I cannot fathom why such a decision would be taken when it is more beds we need; not less.” she continues

“I am convinced that this decision will harm patients, put more pressure on our main hospital Mayo University Hospital and cause huge upset to families who want to get their loved ones back into the community care setting. The demand on our health service is increasing and patients have to go somewhere, closing a district hospital when we have no additional capacity elsewhere makes absolutely no sense and will cause major problems across the county.” she continues

“I can only imagine this is also deeply distressing to the health care workers who are going to lose their jobs at Belmullet District Hospital. Having visited the hospital myself I saw first-hand how dedicated and hard working the staff were and the excellent level of care being provided to patients at this much needed and valued facility.” says Chambers

“I have contacted the Minister for Health to ask him to intervene and to reverse this decision by the HSE. Continued admissions to the hospital must be permitted and staffing levels maintained.” concludes Chambers
